Palamidis is a very old greek family name. It is impossible to go back to the real roots of the name. Some claim, it comes from the mythical (?) hero Palamidis, son of Argos, king of Nafplion.
However, such an ambition is far from making our research a serious attempt!
The facts:
• Palamidis, the mythical hero is native of the Nafplion area, took part in the Trojan War and is stated as the inventor of the writing and many games such as the Chess and the Dice. His name in greek, was written ΠΑΛΑΜΗΔΗΣ.
• Palamidis is the only known greek name, ending at -idis, that is not written with a "iota", but with an "eta". In greek characters Παλαμήδης and not Παλαμίδης.
• The -ίδης suffix (accented on iota), in greek has the meaning of "son of…" and is mainly found in names originating from the Black Sea area, known as Pontos. The fact that the Palamidis family name is found also as "Παλαμίδης", is rather attributed to a misleading alignment to all other -ίδης ending names than to a specific location origin. It is important to remember that for the majority of Greeks till the late years, writing was not a common activity, the phonetical use of the name transcript by the also uneducated scribes of those times.
• The Palamidis (Παλαμήδης) family name, is found only in the Peloponnese, all known Palamidis originate from this part of Greece.
• Comparing to the rest of the greek family names, there are very few Palamidis in Greece and around the World. Palamidis is a realy rare name!
